What to expect on this trail?
You can consider this easy Baan Pong Basic trail loop the backbone of any trail running route in the area. It is a great route for anyone starting with trail running as the trail is a double track and not technical. But at the same time there are some amazing views to be had along the way. So it is good fun for more experience runners looking to do some climbing training or other workouts.
Baan Pong Basic Trail Loop in detail
The route is a loop, with the start and end point in front of Wat Baan Pong. It is a convenient as there is parking space available, as well as toilets (not super clean though). You will start out on the road, but soon you turn onto a double track trail where immediately you will be rewarded with views of an impressive stone quarry. Soon after that it is time to start climbing!
The climb is relatively long, and running all the way up is definitely not for everyone, but it is a nice hill to practice climbing or do intervals. Your effort will be rewarded though, because the higher you climb, the nicer the views on the valley below. After the first long stretch of climbing the terrain evens out a bit, passing by orchards. There will be more nice spots with amazing views where you may want to stop for a photo. There is a last push with a small climb before the trail turns left and descends along farm roads.
If you like making good speed, this is the time as the trail is comfortable and some parts are even (partly) paved. After this speedy descent you will arrive at a network of wide farm roads. The hard work is done and you will now start making your way back towards the starting point. There are some short ascents and descents along the way, but it is easy sailing compared to the initial climb.
Tips for this trail
- The trail is quite open with not a lot of shade, so the best time to go is in the early morning or late afternoon
- You don’t need special equipment or shoes for this route, it is accessible to any level of runner
- There is a road and a stairway leading up to the white pagoda on the hill nearby. Both are great for interval training, and both are brutal!
- For a post-run coffee or snack, you can check out Brand New Field Good, a scenic local spot that is very popular with Instagrammers. Another place nearby is Hern Lhin Resort a popular stop for cyclists on the Samoeng loop.
